About Satzly

Nowadays, there are so many resources for learning German, or for learning languages in general. There are apps, there are textbooks and graded readers. But I always felt they were lacking in some aspects. I always thought that by changing just a little bit, they could be so much better. I love learning languages myself, so I have first-hand experience with all kinds of apps and books. With all that personal experience, I created a wishlist of what I would love to have in an app. That is the origin of Satzly.

This app is not supposed to replace your main method of learning, for example attending classes with a teacher. Or maybe you prefer self-studying with a textbook. Satzly is supposed to be complementary to whatever method you are currently using. Its focus is on reading. In my experience, learning vocabulary without context is very difficult and gets boring quickly. I always forget words when I learn them that way. But if you learn them in context, it is more engaging, and personally, I can remember them much better. Satzly builds on that idea and tries to make it as user-friendly as possible. If there is a word you don't know in the story, just tap on it and you get all kinds of useful information. You can see the translation and the type of word at a glance. You can even see grammar information. If some sentences are too long, you can turn on Sentence X-ray, which highlights subjects, verbs and objects.

Additionally, I thought it might be interesting to use the sentences from the stories directly as grammar exercises. So after you finish reading a story, you can do exercises for vocabulary or grammar specifically from the content of the story you just finished. You have seen how the vocabulary and grammar are used in real sentences, and you practise based on that. It is not like the grammar exercises from a textbook.
